On June 9, 2026, the Tennessee House of Representatives issued a formal proclamation honoring Nashville criminal defense attorney Nathan Cate for his service to the citizens of Middle Tennessee.
The proclamation was introduced by Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton and Representative Torrey Harris of the 91st House District. It was delivered by courier to N. Cate Law at 222 2nd Avenue North, Suite 220, Nashville, Tennessee.

Full Text of the Proclamation
WHEREAS, we take great pride in recognizing those distinguished members of the legal profession whose skill, integrity, and genuine care for their clients have safeguarded the rights of their fellow citizens and strengthened the cause of justice in the State of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, Nathan Cate is one such committed attorney, who was raised in East Tennessee, graduated with honors from Bradley High School, and earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in religion from Lee University before pursuing his legal education at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law; and
WHEREAS, while in law school, Mr. Cate distinguished himself in mock trial and moot court competitions, earning recognition as a top oral advocate, and went on to learn the craft of criminal defense alongside two titans of the Memphis bar, Bill Massey and Lorna McClusky; and
WHEREAS, in 2014, Mr. Cate brought his talents to Nashville, where he has built a formidable criminal defense practice through N. Cate Law, dedicated to standing with Tennesseans through some of the most confusing and difficult moments of their lives; and
WHEREAS, as a seasoned trial lawyer, Nathan Cate has taken fifty-three jury trials to verdict, securing not-guilty acquittals and hundreds of pretrial dismissals, and has earned recognition as a court-qualified criminal defense expert witness in Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, he approaches every case as a unique puzzle, understanding that justice is found not in slogans but in the patient work of learning each client’s story and that his role often means helping people obtain treatment, find help, and reclaim their futures; and
WHEREAS, his clients describe him as knowledgeable, trustworthy, and honest, a compassionate and communicative advocate who genuinely cares and who tells those facing turmoil, “I believe in you,” and means it; and
WHEREAS, from his earliest days volunteering to assist inner-city youth, Mr. Cate has shown a steadfast commitment to serving others, making himself available to those in need at all hours; and
WHEREAS, it is altogether fitting that we honor an attorney whose talent, determination, and humanity have served the citizens of Middle Tennessee so faithfully and so well;
NOW, THEREFORE I, Cameron Sexton, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the One Hundred Fourteenth General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, at the request of and in conjunction with Representative Torrey Harris, do hereby proclaim that we honor and commend criminal defense attorney Nathan Cate, a tireless advocate for the accused, on his service to justice in Middle Tennessee.
